Songs for
Nancy
Nancy (Anna
Selina) Storace (1765-1817) was one of the most renowned singer-actresses of
her age. The daughter of an Italian double-bass player and born in London, she
was recognised a child prodigy, starring in opera at home and in Italy whilst
still a teenager. Recruited for the Emperor Joseph II’s new Italian opera company
in Vienna, she came to the notice of the leading composers of her age –
including Salieri, Paisiello and Haydn, as well as her remarkable brother
Stephen Storace - who all composed outstanding music for her.
Above all,
Mozart created the role of Susanna in Le
nozze di Figaro specifically for Nancy. Bampton Classical Opera marks
the bicentenary of her death with a varied concert, conducted by Andrew
Griffiths, of vocal and orchestral music written for or associated with her.
The event
opens Bampton’s own 25th Anniversary Season.
